Program Description

Arrival in Tanzania

Arrive at any time and we will arrange a personal transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to Ilboru Safari Lodge on Mount Meru. Climbing information will be gathered within the hotel for a pre-climb briefing and kit check.

Dinner and overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge: Bed and Breakfast

Day 1: Momela Gate -Miriakamba Huts:

Elevation:1597m/5240ft to 2503m/8212ft Altitude gained: 906m

We drive from Arusha to Momela Gate after breakfast. After a brief registration at the gate, our Mount Meru Climbing will begin with a fully armed ranger escorting us, and we will be able to see wild animals such as elephants, zebras, and giraffes, monkeys, antelope, and sometimes elephants along the way.

Dinner and an evening at Miriakamba Hut in a single day.

Time required for mountaineering: 4-6 hours

Habitat: Montane Forest.

Day 2: Miriakamba Huts – Saddle Huts:

Elevation: 2503m/8212ft to 3560m/11,680ft Altitude gained: 1057m

We leave Miriakamba Hut immediately after breakfast for the saddle beneath Little Meru, a short but steep climb.

The walk will take us slowly along the ridge, giving us a spectacular view of the Meru Crater and the spectacular Ash Cone.

After a hearty lunch at Saddle Hut, we can make a quick ascent to the summit of Little Meru (3,820m) for spectacular views just before sundown.

Day 3: Saddle Hut- Summit- Descend to Saddle Hut

Elevation: 3560m/11,680ft to 4566m/14980ft Altitude gained: 1006m

Descent to 3560m/11680ft Altitude lost: 1006m

Climbing begins around 1:30 a.m., with a steep ascent to Rhino Level (3,800 m.) and then to Cobra Level (4350m). We reach the summit (4,566 m) in time for sunrise, with a chance of seeing Kilimanjaro Peak above the clouds. The final section of the climb is along a spectacular slim ridgeline between the sheer internal cliffs and the crater’s sloping outer wall.

Alpine Desert Moorland and Montane Forest

Day 4: Saddle Hut – Momella Gate:

Elevation:3560m/11,680ft to 1597m/5240ft Altitude lost:1963m

Leave Saddle Hut and descend to Momella Gate via the first hut (Miriakamba) where you will be transferred to Arusha/Moshi. The returning switch will most likely be ready on the Momella Gate to select you up to Arusha at Ilboru Lodge.

Mountaineering time: 3-4 hours

Dinner and overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge: Bed and Breakfast.

Departure day

Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport for flight home or another tour at the end of the Mount Meru Climbing program.
